The Ministry of Commerce of China announced that, following the meeting between Presidents Xi Jinping and Donald Trump in Busan, the two countries will suspend port tariffs imposed on each other for one year. Washington will suspend measures from the investigation under Section 301, which targeted China's shipping and logistics industries, and Beijing will do the same with the tariffs applied to American ships. These tariffs, imposed by China on October 14, were a reaction to the tariffs applied by the U.S. on Chinese ships.
The $50 per ton tariffs on Chinese ships in U.S. ports and $56 for American ships in China would have significantly affected the logistics sector, increasing operational costs and altering shipping routes. Analysts estimated that if the measures had been maintained, shipping companies would have paid up to $3.2 billion in U.S. tariffs by 2026.
