Canada and France have announced the opening of consulates in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, as a gesture of support for the local government, in the context of Donald Trump's desire to control the island.
Although Trump has backed away from threats of conquest, he has emphasized the need for greater American influence in the region. Denmark and Greenland have stated that they share security concerns, but Greenland's sovereignty remains a "red line."
The opening of the consulates is seen as a recognition of Greenland's increasing autonomy and an opportunity for it to diversify its international relations, thereby reducing dependence on Denmark. This is part of a broader strategy to turn the issue of Greenland into a European matter, involving other allied states as well.
