Just months before joining the eurozone, Bulgaria reported its first case of single currency fraud. A 40-year-old woman was scammed via an online platform, losing 5,000 leva (about €3,000) under the pretext of currency conversion. The scammers, who appeared to be foreign nationals, contacted her through a messaging app, threatening that her funds would be lost if she did not transfer the money. After following the phishing instructions, the app was taken over by the fraudsters.
