The incident occurred on Monday evening, in the Kinnaird Avenue area of north Belfast, where a man was attacked, suffering significant injuries to his face, neck, and back. Emergency services responded quickly, and the suspect, who is now in police custody, has been arrested for attempted murder. Initially, the attacker was incorrectly identified as Somali, but it was later confirmed that he is Sudanese. The Assistant Chief of Police in Northern Ireland, Ryan Henderson, described the assault as a brutal act, causing concern in the community. Images on social media show how several people confronted the attacker before the police arrived, who praised the community's intervention. The incident has generated reactions from political leaders, with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer calling the attack 'shocking', and Northern Ireland Secretary Hilary Benn calling for calm. Political parties in Northern Ireland have signed a joint statement condemning the attack, highlighting the negative impact on social cohesion.
