The regional government of Brussels announced that, starting in 2027, it will ban the use of rented electric scooters, citing an alarming increase in accidents and issues related to their parking.

Boris Dilliers, the head of the regional government, emphasized that the decision comes as a result of numerous accidents and abuses associated with these vehicles. The licenses of operators Bolt and Dott, which provide rented electric scooters, will expire at the end of 2026. Although the bike rental service will be maintained, Bolt and Dott criticized the ban, arguing that it will affect 60 jobs, especially for low-skilled workers.

The regional government reported 666 accidents involving electric scooters in 2025, a 26% increase compared to the previous year, and highlighted parking issues that affect other road users.
