British Muslim journalist Sami Hamdi, who was detained by U.S. federal immigration authorities for over two weeks, is set to be released and allowed to return to the United Kingdom.

The journalist and commentator based in London, who was visiting the United States for a series of conferences, was detained by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) last month while passing through San Francisco International Airport.

Authorities told Hamdi that he was detained because he had overstayed the validity of his American visa. However, Muslim rights advocacy groups claim that his visa was revoked during his travels, without reason and without prior notice.

On Monday, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) stated that Hamdi accepted the U.S. government's offer to leave the country voluntarily.
