Brazil’s Federal Police announced the cancellation of Flávio Bolsonaro’s passports after the senator and far-right presidential candidate failed to comply with a Supreme Court order to surrender the documents within 24 hours. The measure was taken as part of an investigation into alleged money laundering, an accusation the politician denies.
The deadline expired without Bolsonaro surrendering the passports. Subsequently, Metrópoles, citing sources close to the family, reported that he was believed to be on his way to the United States, without specifying where the plane had departed from. Federal police are checking border crossings to determine whether the senator has left the country. Argentine authorities, however, said there was no record of his entry into Argentina.
Flávio Bolsonaro is also being investigated for alleged corruption linked to the financing of a film about his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro. The Supreme Court also ordered an investigation into his electoral campaign over possible foreign financing.
The senator lost Sunday’s presidential election to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who won 51.79% of the vote, compared with Bolsonaro’s 48.21%. Despite the defeat, he did not acknowledge the result and called for the election to be annulled. The Liberal Party accepted Lula’s victory but requested an investigation into the extension of voting by two hours.
