Starting May 1, 2027, Belgium will implement a new road tax that will affect all foreign drivers, including Romanians, who are in transit on Belgian territory.

Currently, driving on Belgian highways is free for cars, but this situation will change. Drivers will be required to register their vehicle and pay the tax, which will also include a one-day permit option for those who are passing through quickly.

François Desquesnes, the Minister of Transport in Wallonia, emphasized that all road users must contribute fairly to their maintenance. The collected funds will be used for the management of road infrastructure. Fines for not paying the tax will be 70 euros, and annual subscriptions will range between 90 and 125 euros, depending on the vehicle's emissions. The project also requires approval from regional authorities and European institutions before it can come into effect.
