Beijing criticized on Monday the awarding of the first Grammy to the Dalai Lama, describing the distinction for his audiobook, 'Meditations: The Reflections of His Holiness the Dalai Lama', as 'a tool for manipulating anti-China politics'.

The Dalai Lama, the Tibetan spiritual leader in exile in India, stated that he sees the award as a recognition of common universal responsibility. China's reaction came through the spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry, Lin Jian, who emphasized that the Dalai Lama is a political exile involved in anti-China separatist activities.

Since his exile in 1959, after the suppression of a revolt in Lhasa, the Dalai Lama has become a symbol of Tibet's struggle for autonomy. Beijing and the Dalai Lama are also facing off regarding his successor, each having different visions about him.
