Bali Island, a popular tourist destination, is introducing drastic rules to combat mass tourism, which has led to overcrowding and degradation. The new regulations, part of the initiative 'Regional Regulation on the Implementation of Quality Tourism', will require visitors to present bank statements for the last 3 months and a confirmed return ticket.
These measures are intended to ensure that tourists do not stay long-term and that they have sufficient funds to cover their expenses. The proposal, drafted by Governor Wayan Koster, will be reviewed by the Regional House of Representatives in Bali and, once approved, could come into effect quickly, within a year. Recent criticisms highlight the negative impact of mass tourism on the island, which has been described as being destroyed by the invasion of tourists. Bali had 16.4 million tourists in 2024, a significant increase compared to the previous year, raising concerns about the sustainability of tourism.
