A military court in Baku has sentenced several Armenian separatist leaders from Karabakh, including Araik Harutiunian, the former leader of the separatist government, to life imprisonment for charges of aggressive war, genocide, and terrorism.

This region, internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, has been controlled by Armenian separatists for decades but was recaptured by Azerbaijan following a new conflict in 2020 and a rapid offensive in 2023.

Other separatist leaders, such as Arkadi Ghukasian and Bako Sahakian, received 20 years in prison each, as they were over 65 years old. The Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that it will take measures to protect the rights of those judged in Baku, including through actions in international justice.
