Archaeological discovery: Ancient Roman wreck of 2100 years in Sicily

Italian divers have discovered an ancient Roman shipwreck over 2,100 years old, located at a depth of 46 meters, off the coast of the town of Mazara del Vallo, in Sicily.

This discovery, considered one of the most important recent achievements in underwater archaeology, contains hundreds of amphorae in very good condition, likely used for transporting wine, according to Italian Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli.

The wreck was located thanks to information received from fishermen, and diver Giacomo De Mola reported how he stumbled upon it, being impressed by the large number of amphorae. The ship is 21 meters long and 6 meters wide, primarily carrying Dressel 1A type amphorae, specific for wine transport.
