Andres Ritter obtained 46 votes in the LIBE Committee to become the chief prosecutor of the EPPO, succeeding Laura Codruța Kövesi, whose term expires in 2026.

The Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs voted in secret for the appointment of the Chief Prosecutor of the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO), and Andres Ritter received 46 votes, the most among the candidates. In comparison, the other candidates received far fewer votes: 11, 7, and 4. The current chief, Laura Codruța Kövesi, will complete her term in 2026 and cannot be extended according to the institution's regulations. The next step involves negotiations between the European Parliament and the EU Council for the final approval of Ritter's appointment, who is expected to take office for the next 7 years.

The leadership of the EPPO, based in Luxembourg, is a complex task, considering the coordination of cross-border criminal investigations related to the fraud of EU funds. Laura Kövesi's mandate, which began in 2019, has led to the opening of significant investigations, including cases involving Greek ministers and the abusive use of EU funds by MEPs.
