In Portugal, presidential elections are taking place on Sunday, and polls suggest that André Ventura, the leader of the far-right party Chega, could win the first round. However, Ventura, at 43 years old, has little chance of securing victory in the second round. Polling stations opened at 8:00 local time, and the first estimates will be published at 20:00. There are 11 candidates in the electoral race, and the socialist candidate Antonio José Seguro seems to have a slight advantage in the competition for second place, against the liberal MEP João Cotrim Figueiredo. Additionally, Luis Marques Mendes and retired admiral Henrique Gouveia e Melo have chances of qualifying for the second round, which could take place on February 8. The current president, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, cannot run again, and the new president will have an important role in the political context of the country.
