Amnesty International has published a report accusing Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups for the first time of committing crimes against humanity during and after the October 7, 2023 attack in Israel. The organization categorized the attack as a "crime against humanity of extermination," also mentioning other serious violations such as torture, enforced disappearances, and rape. Amnesty emphasizes that these groups continued to commit crimes even after the attack, including by detaining and mistreating hostages. The October 7 attack resulted in the deaths of 1,221 Israelis, mostly civilians, and the taking of hostages, many of whom later died. The NGO concluded that the actions of the Palestinian groups constitute war crimes, having a devastating impact on the civilian population.
