On Saturday, several American and Syrian soldiers were injured following gunfire in Palmyra, Syria, according to the Syrian official agency SANA. The incident occurred during a joint visit to the region that was previously controlled by the jihadist group Islamic State.
SANA reported that the attacker was killed, and the injured were evacuated by American helicopters to a base in Al-Tanf, near the border with Iraq. Two Syrian officials confirmed that a military convoy, consisting of Syrian and American forces, was attacked during a patrol. The Pentagon did not immediately comment on the incident. The U.S. maintains troops in northeastern Syria to support Kurdish forces in the fight against the Islamic State.
