Donald Trump wishes to reopen Alcatraz prison

The American president has included in the 2027 budget proposal a request for funding to transform the former Alcatraz prison into a 'secure penitentiary center equipped with state-of-the-art technology.' This initiative, which advocates for the reopening of Alcatraz, aims to promote a tougher approach to combating crime. The request is part of a broader budget from the Department of Justice, which focuses on investments in prisons and law enforcement, but will require Congressional approval. According to Axios, opening a supermax prison complex would require completely new construction, with an estimated cost of about 2 billion dollars.

Although federal agencies have conducted feasibility studies, no final decision has been made. The project may face political resistance, considering Alcatraz's current status as a tourist attraction, drawing over a million visitors annually. The prison, known for its famous inmates such as Al Capone, was closed in 1963 due to high operating costs.
