In the first weekend of the year, air traffic in Europe was severely disrupted due to technical difficulties and unfavorable weather conditions. In Greece, flights were suspended on Sunday due to a loss of communications, affecting thousands of passengers. Greek authorities confirmed that a malfunction of the radio frequencies paralyzed communications, and air traffic controllers were forced to use backup frequencies to maintain contact with the aircraft.

In Italy, Bergamo airport suspended flights due to technical problems with the landing guidance system and reduced visibility, leaving thousands of passengers stranded overnight. The issue was resolved around midnight, but delays and cancellations were recorded.

In the Netherlands, KLM canceled 124 flights due to winter weather, and Schiphol Airport warned passengers of delays and cancellations, with staff working to de-ice the aircraft. These incidents severely affected the travel plans of many passengers during the busy holiday period.
