More than 150 flights were canceled in the UK on Wednesday as the National Air Traffic Services (NATS) worked to address the effects of a technical failure that disrupted air traffic across the country.

According to FlightRadar24, 177 flights scheduled for Wednesday had been canceled, after approximately 1,300 flights to and from UK airports were canceled on Tuesday. Nearly all of Wednesday’s cancellations affected London Heathrow, the busiest airport in the UK.

NATS announced that the system problem had been fixed, but said it would take time to return to normal because of accumulated delays and the complexity of operations. Heathrow resumed departures but warned that disruptions would continue and asked passengers to check their flight status before traveling to the airport.

Gatwick, Liverpool, Birmingham and Edinburgh airports were also affected. British Airways canceled or rerouted more than 100 flights, while Ryanair reported that more than 65,000 passengers were affected. The incident has brought similar failures in previous years back into focus, including the one in 2023, which affected more than 700,000 passengers.
