The U.S. military prepared this spring to intercept a Chinese vessel in the Middle East, during the war with Iran, after an intelligence report erroneously indicated that the ship was carrying components of a nuclear weapons program. The operation was called off after the information was verified, CNN reports in an investigation published Friday.

According to four sources cited by the U.S. network, armed personnel were preparing to board the vessel, while military aircraft were already in the air. The report had been prepared by an analyst from the Special Operations Command and distributed within the U.S. military.

Further analysis showed that the document had been produced with the help of a chatbot. The tool combined information from open sources with classified SIGINT data and misidentified the nature of the cargo. The analyst allegedly later used AI to draft the report in a standard intelligence format.
