Democrats and the White House have reached an agreement to avoid a partial government shutdown, ensuring funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for the next two weeks. This decision comes in the context of tensions generated by the killing of two protesters by federal agents in Minneapolis. The two parties have decided to separate DHS funding from the rest of the legislation while discussing Democrats' requests to impose restrictions on the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency. President Trump stated that both Republicans and Democrats have united to ensure funding for the majority of the government until September, while maintaining current funding for Homeland Security at the same time. The Senate could vote on the agreement on the same day. Republican leaders who wanted a longer extension of DHS funding were checking for any objections to the agreement in order to adopt it quickly.
