United States Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin announced Wednesday that migrant deportations will continue, one day after the Republican Party’s resounding defeat in the midterm elections. The message was posted on the official X account of the official, who reaffirmed the continuity of Donald Trump administration’s migration policy.
The election results indicated significant losses for Republicans across much of the United States and gains for Democrats, including in traditionally conservative areas. According to local media analyses, Republicans lost ground in 99% of the approximately 2,200 counties analyzed compared with the results obtained by Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election. The setback was particularly pronounced in counties with a majority-Hispanic population.
Although immigration was one of the central issues of Trump’s term, an NBC exit poll showed that only 14% of voters considered it the country’s main problem. The economy was cited by 39% of respondents, while the state of democracy was cited by 32%.
Data cited by the Migration Policy Institute show that U.S. authorities carried out approximately 980,000 deportations between January 20, 2025, and July 31, 2026. Of these, 80% involved people without criminal convictions. PRI estimated approximately 660,000 deportations in fiscal year 2026, which ended on September 30.
