Lakanwal, an Afghan man, appeared Tuesday in front of a court in Washington, DC, where he pleaded not guilty to charges of shooting National Guard soldiers, Sarah Beckstrom and Andrew Wolfe, last week, near the White House. Beckstrom died a day after the attack, and Wolfe is in critical condition. His attorney, Terrence Austin, requested release, arguing that the charges were delayed and that the suspect has no criminal record.
Prosecutors rejected the request, citing the seriousness of the offense. Judge Renee Raymond decided that Lakanwal should be held without the possibility of bail, emphasizing that there are no conditions that would ensure the safety of the community. Lakanwal came to the US in 2021 after collaborating with American forces in Afghanistan and has lived in Washington state with his family.
