The trial of Halima Salman, a 27-year-old American woman accused of receiving military training from the Islamic State organization in Syria, began Tuesday at a federal court in New York. It is the first case of its kind in which an American woman is being tried on U.S. soil, according to a judicial source.
Salman arrived in Syria in 2016, at the age of 17, together with her father, mother, and eight brothers and sisters. In the area controlled by the jihadist group, she married an Islamic State fighter. After turning 18, she was allegedly trained and armed before joining an organization battalion.
She is not accused of taking part in fighting, but of receiving military training from a foreign terrorist organization. If found guilty, she faces up to 10 years in prison.
In 2019, Salman and members of her family were captured and detained in a camp in Syria. Repatriated to the United States in 2024, she was immediately arrested and later released on bail. The defense argues that she is a victim of her father's decision and that the marriage was arranged. The prosecution is also relying on photographs showing her beside the Islamic State flag and holding an assault rifle.
