Japanese police have arrested a man suspected of killing a 39-year-old woman in a hotel in Naha, the capital of Okinawa Prefecture, and stealing her wallet. The incident reportedly took place on Saturday, and the suspect was identified after surveillance camera footage was reviewed.
According to police, the man entered a room with the victim and was later captured leaving with her belongings. He was identified and arrested, but according to local media, he denied the allegations against him.
The case prompted reactions from the United States. U.S. Ambassador George Glass said he had spoken with Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the governor of Okinawa Prefecture, expressing condolences and encouraging full cooperation in the investigation.
Approximately 54,000 U.S. military personnel are stationed in Japan, most of them in Okinawa. Crimes, assaults and traffic accidents involving U.S. service members have previously fueled protests and tensions between island residents and authorities.
