Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has sent members of the government and other senior officials for military training, arguing that military discipline can help shape stronger leaders and contribute to the country’s development. Abiy took part in exercises alongside civilian officials at the Hurso military training center, and photographs were published on social media.
Participants include Muferiat Kamil, president of the House of Federation, Finance Minister Fitsum Assefa, and Health Minister Mekdes Daba. It is unclear when the training began and how long it will last.
The prime minister said Ethiopia’s goal of ensuring prosperity for its citizens requires leaders who are physically fit, morally strong and intellectually prepared. He highlighted the lessons the military offers in discipline, patriotism, responsibility, teamwork and leadership.
The initiative is unusual in a country where senior civilian officials are rarely seen undergoing military training. The move comes amid security problems in Tigray, Amhara and Oromia, as well as rising tensions with Eritrea, fueling fears that a new conflict could break out.
