A man was arrested in Virginia, suspected of having placed homemade bombs in Washington on the night before the January 6, 2021 assault, when supporters of Donald Trump entered the Capitol to prevent the certification of Joe Biden's victory. The FBI conducted a large investigation, releasing images from surveillance cameras and offering a reward of $500,000 for information.

The suspect was caught placing a bomb near the Democratic National Committee headquarters and another at the Republican Party headquarters, both of which were discovered and deactivated without exploding. During the riot, protesters attacked the police and caused significant damage. Trump pardoned nearly all those charged with participating in the riot.
