A 25 kg meteorite from Mars has sold at a New York auction for $5.3 million, becoming the most valuable meteorite ever sold

At a Sotheby's auction in New York, a 25-kilogram meteorite, dubbed NWA 16788, sold for $5.3 million, making it the most valuable meteorite ever sold. It came from Mars and was discovered in the Sahara desert in Niger in November 2023. The fragment has traveled more than 225 million kilometers and was ejected from Mars after an asteroid impact. The initial price estimate was between 2 and 4 million dollars. The identity of the buyer remains unknown.
