A number of 13 Members of the European Parliament from the European People's Party (EPP) group have been sanctioned with a ban on speaking in plenary for six months, after they abstained from voting on the motion of censure against the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, on January 22. Among those sanctioned are UDMR MEPs, Loránt Vincze and Iuliu Winkler. Gheorghe Piperea, AUR MEP, harshly criticized the sanction, considering it a violation of democracy. EPP Vice-President Siegfried Mureșan explained that the sanction was imposed to maintain the unity of the group, emphasizing that MEPs must support the common position of the EPP. Additionally, the opposition leader in Hungary, Peter Magyar, commented that his party was sanctioned for voting based on Hungary's interests, unlike Fidesz MEPs, who have always supported Brussels' directives.
