Type 5 diabetes is a rare form of diabetes that affects approximately 25 million people worldwide, especially in low- and middle-income countries. This form was first described in 1955 in Jamaica and recognized by the WHO in the 1980s, but it was later contested and classified as nonexistent due to a lack of evidence. To date, there is no consensus on the diagnosis and treatment of this form of diabetes.

Unlike type 1, type 2, or gestational diabetes, type 5 diabetes is not related to obesity or lifestyle, but seems to be associated with malnutrition, being referred to as malnutrition-related diabetes mellitus (MRDM). Recent studies suggest that chronic nutrient deficiencies can affect pancreatic function and insulin secretion, complicating existing treatments for other types of diabetes.
