The National Institute of Public Health announces that family doctors reported 12,173 new cases of Alzheimer’s disease last year, but the actual number of people affected is likely higher. Many cases remain undiagnosed or are detected at advanced stages.
The warning was issued on the occasion of World Alzheimer’s Day, observed annually on September 21. NIPH highlights the importance of early recognition of symptoms, access to diagnosis, and care and support services.
Estimates by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation indicate an increase in the number of people with dementia in Romania, from 341,195 in 2019 to 577,177 in 2050. Fear of diagnosis and stigma are barriers for 46% of patients and caregivers.
Specialists say that addressing 14 modifiable risk factors could delay or prevent up to 45% of cases. Recommended measures include physical activity, a balanced diet, regular sleep, social engagement, and quitting smoking. Consultations and cognitive assessments may be covered by the National Health Insurance House, with a referral.
