In Romania, the National Institute of Public Health announced three cases of tetanus in 2025, all in children aged 1-14 years. In the past decade, there have been 64 cases, including 12 in 2024, and three deaths. Tetanus, caused by the bacterium Clostridium tetani, can be prevented by vaccination, which is freely available. Unvaccinated people, especially those who work on the ground, are at increased risk of exposure. It is essential that wounds at risk of tetanus are cleaned and treated promptly.
