A French woman originally from Guadeloupe has been identified as the only known carrier of a new blood type, dubbed 'Gwada negative', recognized as the 48th blood group system by the International Society for Blood Transfusion. The discovery was made after an unusual antibody was detected in 2011, and research was resumed in 2019 using high-throughput DNA sequencing. The woman is believed to be the only person in the world compatible with herself, having inherited a genetic mutation from both parents.
