In 2024, Romanians claimed 43 thousand years of sick leave, mostly for common ailments. Fraud is suspected in around one million cases.

According to CNAS data, Romanians received around 16 million days of sick leave in 2024, the equivalent of 43 thousand. Most days were granted for common ailments such as flu and back pain. The new health minister says at least one million leaves were allegedly granted fraudulently. Leave for serious illnesses such as tumors and AIDS also totaled about 6 million days. Experts highlight the rise in illnesses among young people.
