Akston Biosciences and OKAVA Pharmaceuticals are collaborating to develop anti-obesity treatments for cats, conducting clinical studies at Cornell University.

Currently, there are no Ozempic-type approved medications for cats, and both projects are in the early research phases, with preliminary results expected by the end of the year.

The issue of obesity in cats is significant, with approximately 61% of cats and 59% of dogs being overweight or obese, according to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention. Obesity in cats is difficult to treat due to their behavior, and GLP-1 therapies could offer an effective solution. Although the development of these medications reflects a transformation in the pet industry, high costs could limit their adoption.

Analysts suggest that, in the short term, the market will remain dominated by weight control programs and veterinary diets.
