Researchers have adapted CAR-T therapy, used in cancer treatment, to combat HIV, achieving promising results in two patients. They received a single dose of genetically modified T cells, which suppressed the virus for nearly one year and two years, respectively, without the need for regular medications. Dr. Steven Deeks, the study leader from the University of California, emphasized the need for a safe and effective solution for HIV. Although CAR-T therapy has shown promising results, larger studies are needed to confirm its long-term efficacy. Nearly 40 million people live with HIV worldwide, and current treatments are costly and require constant adherence. The new approach involves creating CAR-T cells capable of identifying and destroying HIV-infected cells, offering new hope in the search for a possible cure. Although the results are encouraging, experts warn that further research is needed to validate these findings.
