In the last two weeks, Romania and Romanians have occupied a visible place in the European press, and the resulting picture is complex: from Romania's strategic role on NATO's eastern flank, to participation in Eurovision, up to sensitive episodes involving the Romanian diaspora in Italy and Germany. The analysis is based on data collected by the media monitoring platform NewsVibe Romania for the period of February 21 – March 6, which indicates 944 articles published in European countries, especially in Spain and Italy.
Romania, NATO hub on the eastern flank: the mission in Constanța
The most important geopolitical file in which Romania appears in the European press is that of security on NATO's eastern flank. The Spanish station COPE Albacete publishes an article detailing the completion of the mission of Squadron 14 of the Los Llanos Air Base in Romania. According to the material, the Eurofighter detachment of Spain has operated in recent weeks from the base in Constanța, in a mission of air surveillance of NATO's eastern flank, in close cooperation with the Luftwaffe. Operations commander Juan Bengoechea explains to COPE Albacete that the force report was 80% German personnel and means and 20% Spanish, emphasizing that the Spanish military are "guests" in a mission predominantly led by Germany and that the objective is both to "improve the fulfillment of the NATO mission," as well as to increase interoperability.
The base in Constanța is described as an operational platform for the defense of the Alliance's airspace, and the fact that Spain and Germany cooperate on Romanian territory sends a strong message about confidence in Romania's infrastructure and capacity to support complex missions.
From a geopolitical perspective, this type of coverage strengthens the perception of Romania as a pillar of collective security, a relevant message both for public opinion in Spain and for how Romania's role in NATO is perceived.
Romanians in the cultural space
If in the security area Romania appears as a NATO hub, in the cultural area it is seen as an integrated and recognized actor. Publications from Germany and Austria mention that the young singer-songwriter Alexandra Căpitănescu, born in 2003, will represent Romania at the Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna with the song "Choke Me." The articles state that she won the National Selection broadcast by public television, following the jury's vote, and that Romania will perform on May 14, in the second semifinal, at Wiener Stadthalle in Vienna, Austria.
Also in the cultural area, the regional publication Ideal from Granada publishes an article in which Romania appears as a provider of expertise. According to this material, the Spanish Ministry of Culture has appointed a committee of ten experts, eight foreign and two Spanish, to evaluate the candidacy of the city of Granada for the title of European Capital of Culture 2031. Romania is represented by Csaba Borboly, vice president of the Harghita County Council, alongside experts from Malta, Italy, Finland, Estonia, the Netherlands, Germany, and Poland.
In Portugal, the magazine SÁBADO brings Romania to attention through an article about the famous writer António Lobo Antunes and his visit to Romania in 2014. The text recovers a report made at that time, when the Portuguese author visited the country in the company of his Romanian friend, poet and translator Dinu Flămând, and was a "star" at several literary events. The article links this experience to the launch in Lisbon of the volume "Sombras e Falésias" by Dinu Flămând, published by Guerra & Paz and presented at the Bertrand bookstore. This cultural vignette describes Romania as a space for intellectual dialogue, a meeting place between literatures and the circulation of ideas, and the tone of SÁBADO is clearly positive, with accents of admiration for the friendship and literary collaboration.
The Romanian diaspora in Europe
In Italy, the case of a young woman named in the press Elena, a 21-year-old Romanian missing in Foggia, is intensively reported by ANSA and the regional press, including l'Adige. The published articles reconstruct the timeline: Elena, together with a Romanian friend, arrived in Italy about three months ago, initially worked as an agricultural laborer in the fields of Foggia, and then allegedly began to prostitute herself on state road 16, in the Borgo La Rocca area. It is noted that Elena is an orphan, has no siblings, and has no relatives in Italy, which accentuates her vulnerability, and the friend who reported her disappearance to the police is her only local social reference.
The tone of the Italian press in this case is deeply empathetic, but still laden with drama. The Romanian diaspora is represented through the figure of a vulnerable young woman, pushed into the informal economy and street prostitution, which fuels a collective imaginary in which Romanian women often appear as victims of precarious migration and a hostile social environment.
Also in Italy, but on a different note, the daily Corriere della Sera, in its edition for the province of Brescia, publishes an article revealing a labor exploitation network. According to the text, the carabinieri and Guardia di Finanza discovered in the province of Brescia 14 Moldovan workers, three of whom are minors, all in an irregular situation, exploited by three Romanian citizens, arrested for below-minimum contractual wages, violation of working and rest schedules, accommodation in degrading conditions inside the factory, and a system of companies used for tax evasion and facilitating illegal immigration.
Here the tone is categorically negative towards the involved Romanians, presented as organizers of a form of organized crime and trafficking of vulnerable labor. This type of coverage strengthens a stereotype of the community associated with illegal networks, which can influence internal political debates in Italy regarding migration and border controls.
The General Tone in the European Press:
Of the 944 articles, 769 (81%) have a neutral tone, 89 (9%) negative, and 86 (9%) positive.
