The President of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen, stated that the reduction of nuclear energy in the EU was a strategic mistake and announced investments in small modular nuclear reactors.

Ursula Von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, stated that the decision to reduce the share of nuclear energy in the European Union's energy mix was a strategic mistake, considering that the EU does not produce oil or gas. Currently, nuclear energy contributes nearly 15% to the EU's electricity production, down from a third in 1990.

In a speech at an event dedicated to nuclear energy in Paris, Von der Leyen emphasized the importance of developing small modular reactors (SMRs) to reduce Europe's dependence on imported fossil fuels. The European Commission will allocate 200 million euros from the emissions trading system to stimulate these investments, with the aim of making the new technology operational by the early 2030s.

She also mentioned that high energy prices, caused by conflicts in the Middle East, highlight Europe's vulnerability as an importer of fossil fuels and underscore the need to increase energy production from renewable and nuclear sources.
