The European Commission has approved the modification of Transgaz's commitments to allow gas exports to Ukraine, contributing to the diversification of supply.

The European Commission announced on Friday the approval of the modification of the commitments made by the National Gas Transmission Company Transgaz S.A. in March 2020, in the context of an antitrust case. Initially, Transgaz offered capacities for natural gas exports to neighboring EU member states. With the new commitments, the company will also be able to export to Ukraine, supporting the development of a regional gas market.

In May 2026, Transgaz requested the modification of the commitments to allow competitive export capacities between Romania and Bulgaria, as well as Romania and Ukraine. These capacities will be allocated through auctions, ensuring a fair distribution of resources. The Commission assessed the request and found that the modifications are compatible with the initial objectives, with the commitments remaining in force until December 31, 2026. Transgaz is the main operator of the National Gas Transmission System in Romania, with the Romanian State as the main shareholder.
