Kaja Kallas calls for the acceleration of the EU accession process: "Enlargement has been described as the most successful external policy of the Union, expanding the area of stability, peace, and prosperity"

Kaja Kallas, chief diplomat of the European Union, stated that the European bloc must act more quickly to include new members, such as Ukraine, Moldova, and Montenegro.

At the annual EU diplomats' conference, Kallas emphasized that enlargement must remain merit-based, but in the current context, it is essential to accelerate the process. She highlighted that enlargement is an "antidote against Russian imperialism" and a sign of the stability of the European Union.

Although the European Commission supports rapid enlargement, national capitals prefer a more gradual approach.

Kallas stressed that enlargement is not just a bureaucratic process, but a geopolitical choice, having broad support among European citizens.

Currently, authorities are trying to finalize accession negotiations with Ukraine by the end of 2027, although the process could take longer. At the same time, there are concerns that a public debate on this subject could benefit far-right parties in upcoming elections.
