The European Union and Iceland have signed a partnership for security and defense, which raises the level of bilateral cooperation in a security context characterized by volatility and interdependence.

In short

1.The EU and Iceland have signed a partnership for security and defense.

2.The agreement extends cooperation in areas such as Ukraine, the Arctic, and cybersecurity.

3.Dialogue and consultation mechanisms are provided, including an annual dedicated dialogue.

4.The partnership strengthens existing relations within the framework of the European Economic Area.

The partnership was signed by the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iceland, Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir, and is presented as a step that brings cooperation between the two parties to a new level.

The agreement establishes a tailored framework for cooperation, based on common values and interests in foreign and security policy, and aims to deepen exchanges on regional security and strengthen cooperation in areas such as support for Ukraine, the Arctic region, maritime security, cybersecurity, emerging and disruptive technologies, economic security, and the link between climate change and security.

The partnership will be supported by a series of dialogue and consultation mechanisms designed to facilitate the exchange of information and coordination, including an annual dialogue dedicated to security and defense. These mechanisms are designed to ensure strategic guidance and oversight in the implementation of cooperation.

The signing of the agreement takes place in a security context described as volatile and is presented as an important moment for the relations between the European Union and Iceland, which are already strengthened by the Agreement on the European Economic Area. The partnership is seen as an impetus for deepening these relations and for strengthening the security and prosperity of both parties.

Overall, the new framework reflects the European Union's trend to develop security partnerships with neighboring states, extending cooperation beyond the Union's borders and adapting it to geopolitical and technological developments.
