The Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced on Sunday, after a phone conversation with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, that the authorities in Serbia discovered high-powered explosives and detonation devices in the area of critical gas infrastructure connecting Serbia to Hungary. Orbán specified that the investigation is ongoing and called for an extraordinary defense council. The discovery is said to concern the TurkStream pipeline area, crucial for Russian gas exports to Europe, in the context of the disruption of other export corridors due to the invasion of Ukraine.

The message from the Hungarian Prime Minister comes at a politically sensitive moment, with a week before the parliamentary elections on April 12, 2026, considered a difficult electoral test for the Fidesz leader. The theme of energy security has been central to Orbán's campaign, while Vučić faces internal pressures and anti-government protests. Tensions related to energy security are amplified by a broader conflict between Budapest and Kyiv, with Hungary remaining dependent on Russian gas.
