The Republic of Moldova and Ukraine officially opened, on Monday, in Luxembourg, the first cluster of negotiations for accession to the European Union, dedicated to fundamental values.
The event coincides with the second Intergovernmental Conference between the Republic of Moldova and the European Union, led by Moldovan Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu. The opening of the cluster was made possible after the approval, on June 12, of the common negotiating position by the 27 EU member states. The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, emphasized the importance of this step, highlighting the determination of both countries in promoting reforms. The cluster covers essential areas such as the rule of law, judicial independence, and respect for fundamental rights, marking an important stage in the process of European integration.
The Republic of Moldova applied for EU membership on March 3, 2022, obtaining candidate status on June 23, 2022. The negotiation process was officially launched in 2024, and in 2025 the screening of national legislation was completed.
