The European Union’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, warned on Saturday that suspending US sanctions on Russian diesel would provide Moscow with additional revenue to finance the war against Ukraine. The statement was made after Washington announced the resumption of some transactions involving this fuel.
“This is not the time to ease pressure on Russia, and Europe will not do so,” Kaja Kallas wrote on the X platform. She noted that Russian attacks had killed more than 80 Ukrainian civilians in two days and accused Moscow of intensifying its hybrid actions against EU states and NATO allies.
US President Donald Trump announced on Friday that the US will allow massive quantities of Russian diesel to be delivered to the American and global markets, by suspending the sanctions imposed on Moscow for these transactions. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called the decision “unworthy”.
Meanwhile, the European Union is preparing new measures against Russia. The foreign ministers of the member states are expected to approve on Monday the addition of approximately 1,600 individuals and entities to the sanctions list. The European list currently targets around 3,000 individuals and entities involved in actions against Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
