The European Union’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, announced that the bloc will not ease pressure on Russia following the oil deal presented by US President Donald Trump. EU foreign ministers intend to approve on Monday the most extensive list of individual sanctions against “Russia’s war machine” since the beginning of the conflict.
Kallas argued that Russian attacks have killed more than 80 Ukrainian civilians over the past two days and that Moscow has intensified its hybrid actions against EU member states and NATO allies. She criticized the suspension of sanctions on Russian diesel, arguing that the measure provides the Kremlin with additional revenue to finance the war.
Donald Trump said on Friday that Russia will immediately supply more than 300,000 tons of diesel to markets in the US and around the world, with the possibility of additional deliveries. Analysts cited by Axios are skeptical that the volume will significantly reduce prices.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the deal “unfair and dishonest”, considering it a gift to Vladimir Putin. On Saturday, Trump called for Zelenskyy to be replaced by a leader willing to reach an agreement with Russia.
