George Simion, the leader of the extremist party Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), was reconfirmed on Friday in the position of vice president of the European Conservatives and Reformists Party (ECR), according to an official statement.
Simion was elected unanimously, alongside Carlo Fidanza and Marion Marechal, the other two vice presidents of the ECR. The president of the formation is Mateusz Morawiecki, former Prime Minister of Poland from 2018 to 2023. The ECR, founded in 2009 by British and Polish conservatives, became the third largest formation in the European Union legislature after the 2024 elections. AUR is part of this group, alongside Brothers of Italy, led by Georgia Meloni, and the Law and Justice Party (PiS) from Poland, thus strengthening its influence in the European Parliament.
