Fuel and lubricant prices for personal transport increased by 20.8% in the European Union in April 2026 compared to April 2025, continuing the strong advance recorded in March, according to data published by Eurostat. In March 2026, the annual increase was 12.9%.

In short Fuel and lubricant prices for personal transport increased by 20.8% in the European Union in April 2026 compared to April 2025.

All member states reported price increases, and 15 countries had increases of over 20%. The largest annual increases were in Luxembourg, France, Sweden, Latvia, and Bulgaria. Diesel became 33.7% more expensive compared to April 2025, while gasoline increased by 13.6%. Romania appears in Eurostat data among the countries where gasoline prices decreased in April compared to March 2026.

The data marks a change compared to the previous period. Eurostat shows that, until February 2026, fuel and lubricant prices in the European Union were generally decreasing both at the EU average level and in most member states.

In April, the increases were widespread. The largest annual price increases were recorded in Luxembourg, with 33.8%, in France and Sweden, both with 29.3%, in Latvia, with 28.1%, and in Bulgaria, with 27.8%. The smallest increases were reported in Hungary, with 1.5%, Poland, with 8.8%, and Italy, with 12.9%.

Diesel had a more pronounced evolution than gasoline. In April 2026, diesel prices were 33.7% higher than in April 2025, after an annual increase of 19.8% in March. Gasoline prices increased by 13.6% annually in April, after a rise of 9.4% in March.

Compared to March 2026, consumers in the European Union paid 7.9% more for diesel and 2.4% more for gasoline in April. Eurostat notes that diesel prices increased in all member states between March and April 2026. The largest monthly increases were in Slovenia, with 23.5%, Bulgaria, with 19.5%, and Cyprus, with 18.0%.

In the case of gasoline, 23 member states recorded monthly increases in April. These varied between 12.9% in Slovenia and 1.3% in Ireland. Romania, Spain, and Poland reported decreases in gasoline prices compared to the previous month, by 1.2%, 4.6%, and 6.1%, respectively.

Eurostat specifies that the data comes from the harmonized consumer price index, the main tool used at the European Union level to measure inflation. In the case of Malta, fuel prices have been regulated since 2020, which is why Eurostat notes that there has been no change.
