Why is Europe warming twice as fast as the rest of the world

Global warming affects Europe with an intensity twice as great as other continents, with average temperatures 2.5 degrees Celsius higher than before the use of fossil fuels, nearly double the global average increase of about 1.4 degrees. This is due to factors such as changing weather patterns, proximity to the Arctic, reduction of snow cover, and decreased air pollution, shows an analysis The Guardian.

Why is proximity to the Arctic important

The Arctic plays an important role, being the region with the fastest warming on the planet. As sea ice melts, the dark water of the ocean, exposed in its place, absorbs more solar energy than the white surface of the ice, which reflects radiation. This amplification mechanism — less ice, more absorbed heat, and then even less ice — affects Europe more strongly, relatively close to the Arctic.

Less and less snow

A similar trend is seen on the continent, through the retreat of snow. The snow cover reflects sunlight; once reduced, the darker ground retains a larger portion of energy. In March 2025, the European area covered by snow was 31% below the 1991-2020 average — the third lowest level since the start of the observation series in 1983. Copernicus confirms that the reduction of snow decreases albedo and accelerates regional warming.

Changing weather patterns

The third explanation lies in atmospheric circulation. The Guardian shows that changes in the way air circulates over Europe have favored more frequent and intense summer heat episodes. The immediate example is the heatwave of June 2026, when an extensive mass of hot air became trapped under a "heat dome."

Samantha Burgess from the Copernicus Climate Change Service states that over 40 years of series indicate statistically significant changes in atmospheric pressure patterns and circulation, more likely associated with climate change than natural variability. Research still cannot accurately quantify the weight of each mechanism nor establish a definitive linear link between Arctic warming and each European atmospheric blockage.

Reduction of pollution

Finally, Europe today has cleaner air than in the past, an important progress for public health. The reduction of pollutant particles in the atmosphere — mainly from burning fossil fuels, traffic, energy production, and industrial activities — has partially eliminated an effect that masked warming. Some of these particles reflect solar radiation or influence cloud formation; with their reduction, a larger proportion of solar energy reaches the surface, and the warming effect of greenhouse gases becomes more visible. Fewer aerosols mean less reflected radiation and a more visible manifestation of the heat retained by greenhouse gases.
