According to the Geological Agency of Indonesia, a volcanic eruption occurred at 1:35 a.m. local time, lasting approximately nine minutes. An earlier eruption, two hours prior, projected ash to an altitude of 9 kilometers. The head of the agency, Muhammad Wafid, warned the population near the volcano to be cautious of possible volcanic mudslides, especially in conditions of heavy rain, and recommended the evacuation of a 6-7 kilometer area around the volcano. Residents of nearby villages have already been evacuated, recalling a major eruption in November 2024, which resulted in the death of 10 people and the destruction of thousands of homes. Fransiskus Xaverius Seda Airport in Maumere has been closed until Thursday, according to the operator. Indonesia, located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, has over 120 active volcanoes and is prone to intense seismic activity due to its position on multiple tectonic plates.
