The European Union has issued a serious warning regarding the COP30 agreement, preparing to block it if the participating countries do not commit to stronger commitments regarding emission reductions and climate actions. Criticism focuses on the proposal presented by Brazil, which the EU considers to be lacking scientific basis and weak in terms of commitments related to fossil fuels and climate financing. The Commissioner for Climate, Wopke Hoekstra, described the proposal as having major weaknesses, and European ministers have been urged to obtain mandates to block the agreement in the absence of significant changes. The negotiations have been affected by the increased influence of BRICS countries, and the proposal has also been criticized by vulnerable countries for the lack of clear targets regarding deforestation and adaptation financing. The self-imposed deadline for finalizing the agreement has already been exceeded.
